EDUCATOR STANDARDS BOARD MONTHLY ONLINE UPDATE
December 27, 2004
Overview
Today’s monthly online update will include updates
on the following topics:
- Approval of non-voting members to
the Higher Education Committee;
- ESB leadership, stakeholder group
meetings in December;
- Board members determined as writing
team liaisons
- Approval of “Request to Address the
Board” form
Four Non-Voting Positions Approved for Educator
Standards Board Higher Education Committee
The Educator Standards Board’s Higher
Education Committee expanded to include four non-voting
member positions at its monthly meeting in December in an
effort to bring a broader range of higher education
experience to the work of the committee. The new member
positions include one public college or university Dean or
Chairperson of Education, one private college or university
Dean or Chairperson of Education, one Education faculty
member (public or private), and one Arts and Sciences
faculty member (public or private).
Senate Bill 2, the legislation that
mandated the creation of educator standards in Ohio,
includes language that allows for the appointment of
additional non-voting members to ensure that there is a
balanced higher education perspective among committee
members.
ESB Leadership, Stakeholder
Groups Convened in December
Members of Board leadership met
separately with the Ohio Association of Private Colleges of
Teacher Education, and the Ohio Education Association in
December to address various issues unique to each group.
In each meeting, the ESB members outlined the
responsibilities of the Board and how the development of the
new standards would impact each entity. Board leadership
will continue to meet with stakeholders on a regular basis
to keep them informed of the most current progress of the
Board.
Board Members Determined as Writing Team Liaisons
Larry Johnson, chairperson of the ESB
Standards Committee, reported at the December meeting that
at least one Board member from the Standards Committee would
always be present at each writing team meeting. The
following Board members will serve as liaisons to a specific
writing team:
Board Member Liaison
Writing Team
Shawn Jackson
Professional Development Writing Team
Julia Simmerer
Teacher Standards Writing Team
Maureen
Yoder Principals Standards Writing
Team
The writing teams met Dec. 8-9 around
the principal and teacher standards, and Dec. 15-16
regarding professional development. A discussion about
professional development took place at the Board meeting
this month and a number of issues were identified that will
continue to be discussed in upcoming meetings. The ESB will
continue to keep open lines of communication between itself
and the writing teams to ensure the iterative process.
ESB Approves “Request to Address
the Board” Form
A form that non-members will be
required to fill out to address the Board at its monthly
meetings was recently created and approved in order to
assure time on the agenda for members of the public.
Interested parties wishing to address the ESB may do so in
one of two ways.
1.
Those who wish to secure a place on the agenda must
submit the completed “Request to Address the Educator
Standards Board” form. Included with the submission must
be a copy of any materials to be distributed to the ESB.
The form and materials must be received by the director at
least one week prior to the date of the ESB meeting in
order to secure a place on the agenda.
2. On the day of
the ESB meeting, interested parties may address the ESB
during Public Comment by placing their name(s) on the
“Public Comment” sign-up sheet located at the entrance to
the ESB meeting. Speaking order will be determined by
order of sign-up with no more than two minutes per speaker
allotted and no more than thirty minutes total. It is not
guaranteed that every person signing up will be assured of
speaking.
The form will be available on the ESB Web site by Thursday,
Dec. 23, 2004.
