EDUCATOR STANDARDS BOARD
DIRECTOR’S REPORT
NOVEMBER 1, 2004
The month of October has been an eventful one in the short life of the Educator
Standards Board. The work of the Board has begun in earnest, and the operation
of the Board is beginning to function more rapidly.
On Wednesday, October 20th, two small group meetings were held with ESB members
to discuss the concept of a framework for the standards to be developed and to
brainstorm some “big ideas” or guiding concepts to give direction to the
writing teams as they begin their work. Both small groups came up with numerous
ideas. Some discussion was also held about the short term and long term
implications of the work of the ESB and the “scope and sequence” of the
decisions the ESB will make.
On September 28-29, Bill Shriver, Jim Uphoff, and I attended the OTELAC
meeting. To reciprocate, OTELAC will be sending one of their members to each
ESB meeting over the next eight months.
On October 27-28, the Teacher Standards writing team, the Principal Standards
writing team, and the Professional Development writing team met for the first
time. Attendance was excellent and the energy level was high. Bill Shriver and
Larry Johnson addressed the teams on Wednesday evening. On Thursday, the teams
were given background information on standards work in general, and on the
requirements of SB 2. The remainder of the day was spent with each team
brainstorming “big ideas” for their respective standards and using an analysis
tool to review some national standards and some sets of state standards for
their pro’s and con’s. The ideas generated are to be shared with the ESB.
The development of the ESB website is continuing. ODE IT staff are examining
how the site will be delivered and if it is feasible to deliver it outside of
the ODE website. A preview link will be available soon for Board members to
review and suggest revisions.
The first edition of the ESB online newsletter was distributed in October. The
newsletter has a limited distribution to some major stakeholders and is
basically a summary of the minutes from the previous month’s minutes.
