EDUCATOR STANDARDS BOARD
DIRECTOR’S REPORT
OCTOBER 17, 2005
The interim period between the September
19 ESB meeting and October 17 has been extremely busy and
productive. The revisions suggested by the State Board of
Education (SBOE), the stakeholder feedback, and the national
reviewers were incorporated into a new draft of the
standards that was communicated to ESB members
electronically for review. Once tacit approval was reached
to support the revised drafts, they were communicated to the
SBOE for one final informal review prior to submission.
Having no additional feedback from that review by the SBOE,
the need for the planned special ESB meeting was eliminated
and the meeting was cancelled. Consequently, staff worked to
ensure standardization of the format for the three draft
standards, and they were presented to the Capacity Committee
of the SBOE on October 10th in a presentation made by Bill
Shriver, Marilyn Troyer, and Cyndi Yoder
Updated drafts of the PD standards were communicated to
Stephanie Hirsh and Joellen Killian of the National Staff
Development Council for review. An updated draft of the
principal standards was communicated to Michael Fullan for
review, and an updated draft of the teacher standards will
be communicated to Charlotte Danielson for a second review.
Time will be spent on October 17th to discuss the mandates
of SB 2, the progress of the ESB in meeting those mandates,
and next steps for the ESB. Discussion will also take place
around the development by staff of “awareness” tools that
ESB members can use in presentations until a full roll out
of the standards occurs after the SBOE formally adopts the
standards.
