EDUCATOR STANDARDS BOARD
DIRECTOR’S REPORT
September 19, 2005
The interim period between the August 7-8 ESB meeting and September 18-19 has
been consumed with revising the draft standards, processing the August 11th
stakeholder meeting feedback, and receiving and processing the Expert Reviewer
feedback. It is fair to say that much of the time and effort of staff and the
ESB has been focused upon readying the draft standards for submission to the
State Board of Education in late September.
However, there are numerous elements to the ESB roles mandated by SB 2 that
must be addressed in the coming months. As a part of my report to the ESB this
month, I will be providing the board with materials that will help delineate the
progress the ESB has made toward meeting the responsibilities outlined in
legislation, and toward identifying and implementing an action plan to address
those responsibilities not yet completed and those that are of an ongoing
nature.
The August 11 stakeholder feedback meeting was held, and all indications are
that the stakeholder organizations were pleased with the opportunity to provide
input. Attendance was very good and a significant amount of feedback was
received. The following groups sent teams to participate: Ohio PTA, Ohio
Association of Secondary School Administrators, Ohio Federation of Teachers,
Ohio School Boards Association, Buckeye Association of School Administrators,
Ohio Middle School Association, Ohio Education Association, Ohio Association for
Private Colleges of Teacher Education, State University Education Deans,
Catholic Conference of Ohio, Ohio Association of Elementary School
Administrators, and the Ohio Association of Community Colleges.
The Higher Education Committee meets this month for the first time since
OTELAC ceased operation, and Dr. Michele Lehman will facilitate the committee in
meeting the responsibilities carried over from the work of OTELAC.
Reminder: The ESB set the fall schedule of meetings to facilitate
communication and response with the State Board of Education during that period.
The ESB will meet September 18-19, October 16-17, and November 20-21. Additional
meeting dates have not yet been set.
